Red.
Your scarlet letters spouted burnt
guarantees of eternity. Your cherry
chapped lips spewed crimson promises,
but you couldn't even keep
the one about loving me forever-
now my bleeding heart is torn in two,
a blood-red rose pierced by a deadly thorn.
Orange.
Your apricot-coated susurrations used
to sing me to sleep and paint sherbet
dreams upon my closed lids. You sang
sweet marigoldnothings but they quickly
turned to murmurs of fire-
now all you do is burn me and create
poppy-coated nightmares.
Yellow.
Your star-studded eyes spoke volumes,
and I believed I could read them.
I thought they were the windows to your
soul. Somewhere I went askew.
You promised me a shooting star-
now I'm left trying to put the sun back
in my sky.
Green.
Your grass-stained fingers drew silly
evergreen patterns on my arms and in
the heart of my palms. I didn't think
the patterns were anything special-
now no matter how many times I try
to retrace the moss-studded memories,
they fade a little more each time.
Blue.
Your cobalt dreams inspired me.
You painted my sky full of blue dwarfs
because you said I took your breath away.
Every day you sent me forget-me-nots
so I would never forget you-
now I spend my days trying to stop
thinking about you.
Violet.
Your lavender-musk cologne used to
encase me in sugar-plum fantasies.
You wanted to give me the world
and fill it with grape-stained
securities and pledges-
now I know I was foolish to believe
you would keep your violet-lined promises.
Indigo.
Your azure irises were so unique but
you always told me I was special.
With indigo dye we stained our names
onto the concrete and entwined them
with a sealed heart.
I should have known even dye isn't permanent-
now all that is left are a few
sapphire smears and a broken heart.
You painted rainbows in my sky-
now I'm left trying
to put color back into my world.
